When i brake(not all the time) and it seems it happens when i am turning at the same time as braking i get a grinding noise from the foot pedal, as if the pads are down to the metal(but they are not). The other day i got a 'whining' noise prior to me braking and when i braked it happened again. Could it be the servo? And...any tips on removing wheel nuts that are refusing to budge. But you can't get the wheels off to check..... try penetrating oil or "plus-gas" (IIRC) but make sure it doesn't go on the discs, tyres or brake pads. Failing that, weld a length of scaffolding pole to your spanner..... Quote
Guest Hotscot Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Took all the wheels off and the pads are fine, the 'buzzing' noise is getting more regular now...when you touch the brakes you get a 'clunking' noise and the buzzing stops !!! then the brakes work fine for another 15 minutes or so then you get the 'grinding' again and sometimes the 'buzzing', no joke. Is fitting a new servo a big job? Quote
Guest nimrod Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Sounds like a problem with the ABS :lol: to be sure get the codes read, the buzzing could be the pump pressurising the system and the grinding noise from the pedal the ABS cutting in but not when your applying the brakes! as you say it occurs while you are turning it could be due to the speed differential of the wheels giving a signal to the ABS system that one wheel is rotating slower, so the ABS cuts in as it thinks you are braking and one wheel is starting to lock up! Guest nimrod Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 Good question you may or not have ABS! do you have a yellow light flash up on the dash when this problem occurs? another way to check is to look in the wheel arches on the back of the hubs here should be a castlelated section? and sensors mounted into therear of the hubs? I cant think of anything else related to the brake system that could buzz or whine apart from servo failure in some form or other! but a problem that causes that sort of noise would be a major vacuum loss and a near non assisted brake system! Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 What age and trim level for your Gal? All face-lifted cars have ABS and most of the original versions also had ABS. Trace brake pipes under bonnet to find ABS pump is maybe the easiest way to tell if you have it fitted - plus the ABS warning lamp on dashboard should light up for a few seconds when you first turn the ignition key to start up.HTH Quote
Topbloke Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 If you do have ABS you could remove the fuse for the abs and see what happens it will not effect the brakes all it doe's is turns the system off and you are on normal brakeing , Obviosly if the noise goe's then you will need to do some further checks Quote

Guest smudge.g Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 I get exactly the same problem with my 96 galaxy. My handbrake and ABS dash lights are normally on all the time - an ongoing problem. When I get the grinding noise, these lights go out and if I try to brake, I get the usual ABS style juddery braking. This normally lasts a few seconds, then it stops, the 2 lights come back on and I return to having 'normal' brakes. I am told that the problem is probably a malfunctioning ABS wheel sensor as described in an earlier post, but havent had time to check it yet!! Quote
